Upgrade your project to the Expo SDK that Expo Go supports, fix mismatched package versions, and get your app opening on your phone again.
Expo Go says my project is incompatible. Upgrade it so it opens again
How it works
- Save a checkpoint first: Vovy commits your current code to GitHub so you can roll back if the upgrade goes sideways.
- Compare SDK versions: A card shows your project's Expo SDK next to the one your Expo Go supports, and links the upgrade notes for each version in between.
- Upgrade the Expo SDK: Vovy runs npx expo install expo@latest, then npx expo install --fix, which moves every Expo package to a matching version.
- Run the doctor: Vovy runs npx expo-doctor and fixes what it flags, like duplicate packages or outdated config, before you ever open the app.
- Open it on your phone: Vovy starts the dev server, you scan the QR code, and a card lists any breaking changes it had to fix along the way.
What you provide
- Your Expo project
- A GitHub repo for the checkpoint
What you get
- A project on a supported SDK
- Matching package versions
- A clean expo-doctor report
FAQ
Why did this happen when I changed nothing?
Expo Go auto-updates from the store and only supports the latest SDK, so older projects stop opening.
Can I skip several SDK versions at once?
You can, but upgrading one version at a time makes errors easier to trace.
Is there a way to avoid this in future?
Yes. A development build is tied to your project, not the store's Expo Go, so it keeps working.
