Create an OpenAI project and API key, add credits, and store the key as a secret on your server so your app's AI feature works safely.
Get me an OpenAI API key and put it in my app so the AI part works
How it works
- Open the OpenAI API platform: Vovy opens platform.openai.com, which is separate from a ChatGPT subscription. You sign in yourself.
- Add prepaid credits: The API is billed separately from ChatGPT Plus. Vovy opens Billing and shows the minimum top-up. You approve the charge.
- Create a project and key: Vovy creates a project named after your app, then a secret key inside it. Keys start with sk- and are shown only once, so Vovy stores it immediately.
- Store it as a server secret: Vovy saves OPENAI_API_KEY as a Supabase Edge Function secret or a Vercel environment variable, never in frontend code where anyone can read it.
- Test a real request: Vovy sends a tiny test call from your server and shows the response and its cost on a card, so you know the key, credits and code all work.
What you provide
- An OpenAI account
- A card for API credits
- Your app's backend (Supabase or Vercel)
What you get
- A project-scoped API key
- The key stored as a server secret
- A working test call with its cost
FAQ
Does my ChatGPT Plus plan cover the API?
No. The API has its own prepaid billing on platform.openai.com, separate from any ChatGPT subscription.
I lost my key. Can I see it again?
No, OpenAI only shows a key once. Create a new one and delete the old one.
Why use a project key?
Projects let you set limits and see usage per app, and revoke one app's key without breaking others.
