Vovy registers a GitHub OAuth App, connects it to Supabase Auth, and adds a GitHub login button. A quick win for developer tools.
Add a Sign in with GitHub button to my app
How it works
- Register a GitHub OAuth App: Vovy opens Settings, Developer settings, OAuth Apps, New OAuth App on GitHub, fills in your homepage and sets the Authorization callback URL to your Supabase callback.
- Generate a client secret: It clicks Generate a new client secret and copies it straight into Supabase. GitHub shows the secret only once.
- Turn on GitHub in Supabase: Vovy pastes the Client ID and secret into Authentication, Sign In / Providers, GitHub, and saves.
- Add the button: In Cursor it adds a GitHub button that calls signInWithOAuth with provider set to github.
- Test and show the result: Vovy clicks through in Chrome, you approve the GitHub prompt, and a card shows the new user with their GitHub username and avatar.
What you provide
- A GitHub account
- A Supabase project
What you get
- A working GitHub login button
- OAuth App registered under your account
- User profile data from GitHub
FAQ
Should I use a GitHub App or an OAuth App?
For just logging users in, an OAuth App is simpler and is what Supabase's guide uses. GitHub Apps are for acting on repos.
Can I get the user's email?
Supabase requests the user's email scope by default, including private emails, so accounts still get an address.
Is it free?
Yes. GitHub OAuth Apps cost nothing.
