Set up EAS Update so JavaScript fixes reach users' phones over the air in minutes, and learn which changes still need a store release.
Fix this typo in my live app without waiting for Apple again
How it works
- Configure EAS Update: Vovy runs eas update:configure, which adds expo-updates and links each build profile to a channel, like production or preview.
- Check the change is OTA-safe: A card explains the rule: JavaScript, text and images can go over the air. New native packages or permissions need a new store build.
- Test on the preview channel: Vovy publishes with eas update --channel preview and opens it on a preview build, so you see the fix before real users do.
- Publish to production: Vovy runs eas update --channel production with a clear message. This reaches live users, so it asks first.
- Show how to roll back: A card shows the update on expo.dev and the one command to republish the previous update if something goes wrong.
What you provide
- An Expo app already in the stores
- Your Expo account
What you get
- Over-the-air updates set up
- A preview channel for testing
- A live fix plus a rollback plan
FAQ
Is this allowed by Apple?
Yes, for bug fixes and small changes to JavaScript. Changing what your app fundamentally does still needs review.
When do users get the update?
By default, the app downloads it in the background and applies it the next time it launches.
Is EAS Update free?
The Free plan covers updates for a limited number of monthly active users. Bigger apps need a paid plan.
