Get the right database connection string | Vovy
Pick the right Supabase connection string, direct or pooled, session or transaction mode, and fix common connection errors.
Which Supabase connection string do I use for Prisma on Vercel?
How it works
- Open the Connect dialog: Vovy clicks Connect at the top of your Supabase project, which lists every connection string for your project.
- Explain the three options: A comparison card: direct connection, session pooler on port 5432, and transaction pooler on port 6543. A pooler shares a few connections among many requests.
- Pick the one for your setup: Serverless hosts like Vercel need the transaction pooler. The direct connection is IPv6-only by default, which many networks can't reach.
- Fill in the password safely: Vovy puts the string in your .env with the real password, encoding special characters like @ and # that otherwise break the URL.
- Test the connection: Vovy runs a test query from your app and confirms it connects locally and from your deployed app.

FAQ
I forgot my database password. Now what?
Reset it in Supabase's Database settings. Anything using the old password will need the new one.
Why do I get too many connections errors?
Serverless functions open a new connection for each request. The transaction pooler on port 6543 fixes this.
Why does the direct connection fail on my network?
It uses IPv6 by default. The poolers work over IPv4, or you can buy Supabase's IPv4 add-on.
