Set up Git on my Mac with my name and email | Vovy
Vovy configures Git with your name, a GitHub-linked email, and main as the default branch, so every commit is credited to you on GitHub.
Set up git with my name and email so my commits show up on GitHub
How it works
- Check Git is installed: Vovy runs git --version. Git, the tool that saves snapshots of your code, comes with Apple's Command Line Tools, so Vovy installs those if needed.
- Find your GitHub email: Vovy opens GitHub Settings, Emails in your browser and copies your private noreply address, so your real email is never published in commits.
- Save your name and email: Vovy runs git config --global user.name and user.email. These stamp every commit so GitHub shows your avatar next to it.
- Set sensible defaults: Vovy sets init.defaultBranch to main, matching GitHub, and sets your editor to Cursor or VS Code instead of the confusing vim default.
- Show your Git config: A card lists each setting Vovy changed, in plain English, with the one command to change any of them later.

FAQ
Why are my commits not showing my GitHub picture?
The email in your Git config does not match any email on your GitHub account. Using your GitHub noreply address fixes it.
Is my email public in commits?
Yes, whatever email you set is visible in the repo history. That is why Vovy uses the noreply address GitHub gives you.
Can I use a different name per project?
Yes. Running git config without --global inside one project overrides the global setting just for that repo.
